What's the New News Project

What's The New News is an interactive community-based project curated and created by Nathaniel Donnett with the contributions of local artists and writers. The project seeks to survey the energy, creativity, value, and spirit of communities. WTNN also looks at how we control narratives through language and expressive forms.

The project invites writers and artists to collaborate on newspapers and the newspaper racks. The news racks were then placed in selected areas, businesses, and historical locations within the historical community of Third Ward - Houston ,Texas.

The project also consists of a youth workshop component led by scholar Jo Pickens. The workshop was held at Project Row Houses. The students wrote poems that were inserted in the newspaper. A writing contest was held and three students were awarded gift certificates to the Barnes & Nobles bookstore.

Also, a 27 minute documentary video short about the project was created. The documentary includes a walk through of the historical Third Ward neighborhood and readings by some of the participating writers.

Lastly, as an online component, online magazines were created so that the documentation of the newspaper could be shared on the worldwide web.
