What's the New News
What's The New News is an interactive community-based project curated and created by Nathaniel Donnett, with contributions from local artists and writers. The project aims to explore the energy, creativity, value, and spirit of communities. WTNN also examines how we shape narratives through language and expressive forms.
The project invites writers and artists to collaborate on newspapers and the newspaper racks. These racks were then placed in selected areas, businesses, and historic locations within the historic Third Ward community in Houston, Texas. The project also includes a youth workshop led by scholar Jo Pickens, held at Project Row Houses. The students wrote poems that were included in the newspaper. A writing contest was organized, and three students received gift certificates to the Barnes & Noble bookstore.
Additionally, a 27-minute documentary short about the project was produced, including a walk-through of the historic Third Ward neighborhood and readings by some participating writers. Finally, as an online component, digital magazines were created to share the documentation of the newspapers globally.
